Overview

The focus of the Assistant Controller position will be to manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting department for the Corporation and its subsidiaries within the scope of guidelines given by the Executive Management. A primary objective is to support the CFO in the timely preparation of financial reports and ensure a timely month end close.

 

Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for the maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA)

 

Experience Required: 

  • The successful candidate will have 3-5 years of increasing experience in Finance and Accounting functions including the relevant experience in a public practice accounting firm;
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop financial analysis and reporting in an efficient and effective manner;
  • Strong financial accounting, management accounting, reporting, and analytical skills;
  • An understanding of key business drivers and fundamentals with a track record of delivering results and enhancing company value.
  • Understanding of multi-company operations and consolidation.
  • Strong analytical skills; someone who seeks answers and solutions, process review orientated.
  • An ability to look at a variety of manual processes and combine into a single start and finish approach.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV would be considered as strong asset.

Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure that bank reconciliations are complete and debt payments are made on a timely basis;
  • Performing monthly recurring journal entries (e.g. loans, cost allocations);
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system including chart of accounts;
  • Preparing analyses of balance sheet accounts and certain revenue and expense accounts;
  • Reviewing all monthly accounting functions for preparation, review, monitoring and reporting on the following: Accounts Payable, Receivables, General Ledger;
  • Providing technical support for accounting program software;
  • Monitors internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures;
  • Prepare intercompany reconciliation and intercompany eliminations for the consolidated entity;
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics;
  • Manage the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for accurate accounting of consolidated business results;
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate year-end close process, supporting working papers for the financial statement audits;
  • Provide information for bank and other audits; oversee regulatory reporting and compliance;
  • Provide senior management with timely information for decision-making;
  • Assess current operations for internal controls, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes and procedures;
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly finance and business forecasts.

 

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Prepare and maintain the accounting records;
  • Maintain the accounting system procedures;
  • Effectively communicate with operations, the COO, and CFO.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual trial balance and supporting working papers for the financial statements and press releases;
  • Provide ongoing support to the accounting and finance functions;
  • On an annual basis, prepare working papers and liaise with external auditors.
