Position Overview


People look to the Chamber to provide insight, information and experiences that can make their business more successful. Our membership growth is a reflection of the strong suite of marketing efforts and practices.  The Chamber offers a lot to its members – advocacy, policy, research, best practices, events, networking and more.  We need to ensure our existing and potential members know about all we do and see the value of our programming and activities, all the while bringing our brand to life and strengthening it with everything we do.


The Director, Finance and Administration is the backbone of the organization providing overall control and responsibility for all financial aspects of the company as well as ensuring the administrative functions are handled swiftly and effectively.  While leading a team through month ends, year ends and the budgeting periods, our candidate will have excellent communication skills with all levels of team members, working with various departments to meet their needs and budget accordingly. 



  • Chartered Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA)
  • Experienced in getting into the weeds but understands when and how to be strategic to support the greater organization
  • An entrepreneurial mind set – while you want to be the first to point out risks, also get creative enough to look past them strategically
  • 10+ years of accounting and finance experience, with evidence of increasing responsibility
  • A background working alongside audit committees and Board Chairs
  • Demonstrated ability to present to large groups complicated information in crisp and concise way (a background in public speaking would be considered an asset)
  • Must be prepared to to roll up your sleeves and support teams as required (from events to budget season to team builders)
  • A background in payroll (and in this case, you’ll be administering it), Payworks experience would be considered an asset
  • An ability to come up with creative ideas even when it is outside the normal scope of work
  • Experience in designing financial models and scenarios that support growth strategies in all lines of business
  • Strong financial management acumen
  • Ability to work independently but a keen interest to be part of a team
  • Strong supervisory experience and a willingness to be a coach and mentor throughout the organization

  • Coordinate the preparation of the Chamber’s operating and capital budgets, provide regular performance to budget reporting and prepare regular financial forecasts.
  • Provide direction and control in accurately recording and maintaining the records in compliance with GAAP, timely collection of receivables, payment of invoices and compliance with tax authorities.
  • Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP and manage the external audit requirements
  • Provide comprehensive financial statements and other reports to management, Finance and Audit Committee and the Board of Directors on a regular basis
  • Guide and direct the Chamber’s insurance and risk management program to optimize the Chamber’s insurance and internal policy protection
  • Act as a Corporate Secretary, maintain the Chamber minute books, advise the Chamber on maters of corporate governance
  • Ensure compliance with all debt agreements and develop and maintain business relationships with current and potential lenders
  • Act as administrative capacity in support of our Investment Committee and oversee all matters delegated to Management in the Investment Committee activities liaising with Fund Managers, advisors and the Custodian
  • Implement and oversee overall organizational financial policies
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiencies and effectiveness as well as reduce costs
  • Produce timely reports for the audit Committee
  • Develop forecasting models that support growth of the business
  • Create, implement and oversee adherence to financial policies and procedures including procurement, contracting/purchasing etc. and ensure consistency of procedures, control and standards are maintained
  • Support the employee compensation program as set by the CEO
  • File tax and GST returns and ensure all municipal taxes are in compliance
  • Process payroll for a 25-person team (Payworks)
  • Review and negotiate benefit premiums



  • Administer the Chamber’s directors and Officers insurance policy
  • Responsible for the oversight of the Chamber’s General Liability insurance policy and the Chamber’s building insurance policy
  • Negotiate and maintain all lease agreements – copiers, mail machine etc.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of the formal Chamber presentations internally and externally
  • Act as the Chamber’s Privacy Officer and ensure adherence to all privacy related matters
  • Ensure the Chamber files and records are properly maintained in an organized and logical fashion according to our document retention policy
  • Administer and identify ways to grow, the Chamber’s insurance benefits plan for members
  • Oversee building and premises related issues arising


Strategic and Business Planning and Budgeting

  • Participate in strategic planning, business planning and performance assessment activities of the Calgary Chamber
  • Develop, recommend, and manage the department’s annual budget, ensuring results, accountability and value for dollars spent.
  • Complete annual departmental plan (aligned with the organizational business plan and departmental strategies) that outline department objectives, activities and measurable outcomes.
  • Support all departments in their own budgeting process


Leadership Team Involvement

  • Building and maintain strong relationships with all members of the Calgary Chamber team.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the organization and act as a mentor and role model for all members of the organization.
  • Recruit, manage and retain qualified staff and recommend/implement staff development initiatives as appropriate.
  • Provide effective management of the department’s human resources and facilitate staff career development.
  • Participate in activities associated with the Board of Directors including preparation of board reports, and communications to support their oversight of the organization.
  • Ensure that the policy and research work of the Calgary Chamber achieves results and achieves the metrics associated with this aspect of the value proposition.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders including: Chamber members, committees and Board; government employees and officials; and strategic partners.
